Outdoor knives need to have good durability to cope with a variety of complex outdoor environments. Here are some commonly used materials for durable
outdoor knives:
1. High carbon steel: high carbon content, generally more than 0.6%, high hardness, can create a sharp and good retention blade, cutting ability. For example,
1095 high carbon steel, often used to make tools, has high strength and wear resistance, but its disadvantage is easy to rust, so the user needs to carry out
proper maintenance.
2. Stainless steel: has good rust resistance, suitable for use in humid outdoor environment. Like 440C stainless steel, is a kind of Martensitic stainless steel, high
carbon content and chromium content, hardness up to HRC58, with good hardness, wear resistance and corrosion resistance, is widely used in tool manufacturing.
3. Powder metallurgy steel: manufactured by special powder metallurgy process, with uniform structure and excellent performance. For example, CPM S30V
powder steel, which has a high content of carbon and vanadium, has high hardness, high wear resistance, good toughness and corrosion resistance, and is the
ideal material for making high-end outdoor tools.
4. Damascus steel: The traditional Damascus steel is made by folding and forging and other processes, with unique patterns and properties. Modern Damascus
steel is usually the steel of different hardness composite forging, not only sharp blade, but also good toughness, high fatigue strength, can withstand greater
impact.
5. Titanium alloy: low density, high strength, strong corrosion resistance, and has good biocompatibility. Although the hardness of titanium alloy is relatively low
compared with some steel, its comprehensive performance of strength and toughness makes it also have certain applications in outdoor knife making, especially
suitable for making tool handles or some tool parts that have requirements for weight.
6. Ceramics: Ceramic knife blade hardness is extremely high, second only to diamond, with excellent wear resistance and sharpness retention, can keep the
blade sharp for a long time. However, the ceramic material is relatively brittle, the toughness is poor, and it is easy to break the edge when subjected to a large
impact, so it is usually used to make small cutting tools, and it is relatively rarely used in outdoor knives.
When choosing an outdoor knife, in addition to considering the blade material, the handle material is also very important, and the common durable handle
materials are G10 fiberboard, Micarta (Micata), antler, cofskin, etc., which can provide a good grip and durability.
